What we typically build

Fit versus SaaS versus a marketing site

Build a custom app when off-the-shelf tools force ugly workarounds, when permissions and data need to live in one place you control, or when the workflow is the product. Do not build one to “have an app” for a brochure business. A custom website plus a reputable booking or CRM product is often the honest answer.

Native mobile apps are out of scope unless the web genuinely cannot cover the job. We will say so. Drupal or a CMS may still be the right public face in front of the app; the application is the authenticated layer behind it.

How discovery works

Vague “build an app” briefs get a scoping phase before a fixed quote. We define users, must-have flows, permissions, data ownership and success measures. That keeps timeline honest and avoids rebuilding the wrong thing. If you have an unfinished codebase, we audit debt first and recommend continue, rewrite modules, or restart — honestly.

MVP means the smallest set of flows that replace the spreadsheet or inbox chaos. Gold-plating reports, notification preferences and “nice” dashboards wait until the core status model is right. UX/UI design often runs first so engineering is not inventing screens in pull requests. Our process still applies: written scope, then iterative build, then a launch that includes support — not a dump of source code on a Friday.

Architecture, integrations and risk

We pick technology for the problem — often a modern TypeScript front end with a clear API — rather than forcing one framework onto every brief. You own credentials and hosting direction at handover. Environments (development, staging, production), secrets, and backup/restore are part of the architecture conversation, not an ops afterthought.

Integrations are scoped with failure modes: timeouts, duplicate submissions, partial updates, and what staff see when the third party is down. Consent and data-minimisation matter when CRM or patient-adjacent data is in play. We will not wire a production integration from a vendor’s happy-path screenshot.

Risks: taking over an undocumented app; expanding roles until nobody can test permissions; storing data you are not prepared to protect; and treating UAT as “click around”. We plan test users per role. Unfinished takeovers start with an audit, not a feature list.

Measurement, handover and adjacent work

Success is operational: fewer manual steps, fewer status arguments, tasks completed by the right role. Vanity concurrent-user charts without a workflow metric are not a product review. We agree what “done” looks like for the first release before we write a lot of code.

Handover includes repository access, hosting accounts in your name, environment notes, and how to ship a change.
